You do not need every sewing tool to start learning. Choose a small set that helps you measure accurately, cut cleanly and work safely.
Begin with a flexible measuring tape, fabric scissors, paper scissors, a ruler, marking chalk, pins or clips and a seam ripper. Keep fabric scissors for fabric only. Store sharp tools safely, especially around children.
Use a sewing machine you can maintain and operate confidently. Read its manual, choose a needle suitable for your fabric and test the stitch on scraps. Replace bent or damaged needles rather than working around them.
Pressing is part of construction. An iron, a stable ironing surface and a pressing cloth can improve a garment long before the final seam. Follow the fabric care guidance and test heat on a hidden piece.
Buy specialist equipment when a project calls for it. Ask about class requirements first so you can spend on the tools you will actually use.
